FAQs

What is yoga?

The word “yoga” means “union”. In our classes we unite our body and our mind and we restore the balance between them. Yoga is a system of physical exercises that help you improve your physical and mental health.

What is pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. These exercises are focus on spinal health and core strength. Traditionally pilates assist convalescence after an injury and helps build up the strength needed to prevent further problems.

My first class – what to bring and what to wear?

First of all, bring your smile and positive attitude! All other things are just small details you can manage without. You are welcome to bring your own mat but we have some here you can borrow or hire. Definitely bring a water bottle and a mat towel – some people prefer to practice without it, but we recommend having one handy just in case your hands get sweaty. (You’ll be asked to use a towel if you use our mats.)

We advise our student to wear stretchy clothes that stay close to your body. The lighter, the better. We have strict no body shaming policy so don’t be anxious, everyone feels awkward first time getting into their lycra… It really doesn’t matter what you wear as long as you are comfortable, and your movements aren’t restricted. Most of the ladies wear capri leggings and tank tops, gentlemen prefer sports shorts and t-shirts/jerseys. Just cover at least what you would cover on the beach 😉

Who are yoga and pilates for?

Everyone. Really, everyone. There are various styles and levels of classes and they can be adjusted to any level of fitness, any age, any gender. Please read through our class descriptions and decide which will be best for you. If you have any questions or you are working with injuries and restrictions please email us before you start practicing and we will help you chose the best option. It is very rare situation that a medical condition would not allow you to practice yoga or pilates and if that is the case you already were informed by your doctor.

What are the benefits of practicing yoga and/or pilates?

Physical benefits: flexibility, a toned and stronger body, improved breathing, cardiac health and metabolism, pain relief and relaxation are the main (but not all) physical benefits.

Mental benefits: a feeling of relaxation, feeling energised and happy. Yoga and pilates are great for those suffering from depression. Calmness, peacefulness, an ability to handle stress and improved self-confidence are also often reported by regular practitioners.
A toned and stronger body.

Pilates isn’t very spiritual however yoga and meditation will also teach you self-awareness, presence, mindfulness and kindness.

How often should I practice?

It really depends on individual abilities and needs. However, as a rule of thumb, we recommend three times a week to start with. Some people prefer to reduce to twice a week and some build it up to every day. The most important thing is to remember that even if you only practice once in a while it is better than no practice at all.

What equipment do I need for home practice and online classes?

You don’t really need any special equipment. We use mats for padding and warmth – you may prefer to have one if your floor is hard or cold but if you feel your carpet is cosy enough it won’t be necessary.

We do use blocks, belts and rubber bands sometimes but they can be replaced by things like hard cover books, cushions, normal belts, towels, a pair of leggings etc. It is fun to get creative and use what you have around you.
